OPTIMUS (FORMERLY SCIENTIFIC BUDDHIST ASSOCIATION),is a self-financinggroup, founded in 1979, Secretary Paul Ingram.

Optimus believes that Tibet has the right to Independence, brutally endedby Communist China following its invasion in 1949/50. Our work has beenpraised by the Dalai Lama. We are not a politically correct group, and havebeen called a "loose cannon". We provide perspectives on the entire Tibetanscene which many others are reluctant to disclose.

As a campaigning group we played a major part in re-introducing the Tibetanissue at the UN in 1984, after an absence of nearly 20 years. In 1982 wealerted Amnesty International to massive Chinese human rights crimes inTibet, and have provided them with much source material, which has beenused in their bulletins and reports on Tibet.

We have mounted nearly 50 campaigns to correct biased or distortedreporting on Tibet, whatever its origin or political complexion, andhelped alert the media to this tragic issue. In 1981 we began campaigningagainst a report issued by the Minority Rights Group (London) entitled 'The Tibetans' criticized for its pro-Chinese stance, which was written byChris Mullin, now an MP. Late in 1983, after constant lobbying, the MRGissued a new report, written by a Tibetan, which proved influential in theyears before the Tiananmen Massacre of 1989.

In 1984 the first edition of 'Tibet :The Facts', written by Paul Ingram wascirculated in the US Senate and Congress, and played an important part ininforming members of the Tibetan issue. Another edition was published in1986, followed by a much expanded version in 1990, which was widelycirculated and reviewed. A 4th edition is being prepared.

Optimus is one of the few groups deeply concerned with coercive birthcontrol in Tibet and China, and such Chinese abuses, which deny women anyright of choice, threaten Tibetans as people. For some 12 years OptimusWomen's Section has forwarded much material , including first handtestimonies, to Amnesty International, and they are now researching andpublicising this issue, (see 'Women in China' 1995, and 'Women in China,Detained, Victimised but Mobilised' 1996 etc). We have also publicised theattempts by the British Foreign Office to censor and suppress this issue byvarious means, including ignoring such works as 'Children of Despair'(Independent Tibet Network), and 'Slaughter of the Innocents' (Dr.J.S. AirdAEI 1990). We have also highlighted Foreign Office attempts to defuse thecentral issue of Tibetan Independence. OPTIMUS has publicised massiveChinese deforestation in Tibet, which many ecologists still ignore, andwhich is destabilising the climate of Asia.

Ultimately, OPTIMUS hopes to unite Buddhism , a religion which has no Godor soul, with science, and encourages scientific research into meditationand nirvana. A series of courses, and mental training programmes are beingresearched, devised and tested.
