2008-12-03 (EU) - The importance of individual happiness, which can be achieved with the help of universal human values - whether religious or non-religious - was one major themes in an address by the 14th Dalai Lama to the European Parliament on Wednesday. The other topic raised by the Buddhist spiritual leader was the current plight and the future of Tibet.
Speaking of Tibet, His Holiness questioned Chinese leadership claiming his tolerance towards the regime was becoming "thinner and thinner". However he stressed: "My faith in the Chinese people remains unshaken and I want to thank my brave Chinese brothers and sisters for their solidarity."
The Dalai Lama's non-violent approach is "an extraordinary example", says EP President.
The Dalai Lama gave his speech to a formal sitting of the House as part of European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

Congressional leaders and President Bush paid tribute to the Dalai Lama, praised his message of non-violence and compassion, and presented him with the Congressional Gold Medal. Several speakers also spoke about the future of Tibet and called for more religious and cultural autonomy for the region. The Dalai Lama read his remarks in English, saying that the values of interdependent existence, non-violence, and compassion were great sources of power and that he was deeply grateful for the concern expressed for the people of Tibet. 1989 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the 14th Dalai Lama

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize to the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people.
The Committee wants to emphasize the fact that the Dalai Lama in his struggle for the liberation of Tibet consistently has opposed the use of violence. He has instead advocated peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people.
The Dalai Lama has developed his philosophy of peace from a great reverence for all things living and upon the concept of universal responsibility embracing all mankind as well as nature. In the opinion of the Committee the Dalai Lama has come forward with constructive and forward-looking proposals for the solution of international conflicts, human rights issues, and global environmental problems.
