2,000 Tibetans protest in Ragya
2009.03.22 (Phayul) - Around 2000 Tibetans came out on the streets of Ragya yesterday immediately after the news of a Tibetan monk’s death spread among the residents. Protest demonstrations were carried out in front of the local police station and government offices. The angry protesters managed to snatch from police the Tibetan national flag that was earlier confiscated by the Chinese officials.

The protest was sparked by the death of Tashi Sangpo, aged 28, who took his own life by jumping into Machu river yesterday after authorities allegedly found leaflets and the banned Tibetan flag from his room. Tashi was a monk of Ragya monastery which has remained under complete lockdown since March 10 when leaflets containing political messages were circulated in the monastery and the banned Tibetan national flag was hoisted atop the monastery’s main prayer hall. more>

UN Human Rights Council Discuss Tibet
2009.03.17 (DIIR) - The UN Human Rights Council currently in third-week of its 10th session in Geneva where numerous international NGOs raised issues concerning serious human rights violations taking place around the globe.

In the afternoon during interactive dialogue, among other NGOs, Tenzin Samphel KAYTA on behalf of the Society for Threatened Peoples said “the report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to food stated that: “At a general level, human rights-based approaches to development cooperation recognize people “as key actors in their own development, rather than passive recipients of commodities and services”. All stakeholders should be involved in analysis and the programmes should focus on marginalized, disadvantaged, and excluded groups, and aim at reducing disparity.

Profiles in Courage: Tibetan Resistance 1959-2009
In the 50 day countdown to the 50th anniversary of Tibet's 1959 National Uprising, SFT profiled 50 courageous Tibetans. Each of these individuals has a remarkable story of courage and defiance to China's occupation of their homeland. Please watch our video compilation to see their faces. Read their profiles to learn more about their remarkable lives.

There are countless more Tibetans inside Tibet and in exile whose heroic stories exemplify Tibetans' determination to never give up until Tibet is free. We will continue to build on this archive of Profiles in Courage. SFT pays tribute to the many Tibetans inside Tibet who we could not profile in the 50 day countdown out of concern for their safety. Many of the Tibetans living in Tibet who we did profile have been unjustly detained or imprisoned and need our help to secure their freedom.

Protesters wearing yellow headbands waved Tibetan flags and chanted 'Free Tibet' and 'We Want Justice' as they marched in central Taipei. On March 10, 1959, Chinese authorities quashed an uprising led by the Dalai Lama, which forced him - and many Buddhist men and women - to flee Tibet. The Dalai Lama marked his 50 years in exile on Tuesday (March 10) by demanding "meaningful autonomy" for his Tibetan homeland, where Chinese authorities have tightened security to stifle protests against their rule.

Remembering Tibetan Uprising Day
Following up on the 50th anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Day yesterday, Tibetan supporters and victims of the persecution by the Chinese regime reflect on how to bring about peace. Heres more on the story. On March 10th, 1959 thousands of Tibetans protested against the invasion of the People's Liberation Army who marched into the autonomous region in 1950. Concerned for the safety of the Dalai Lama, Tibetans surrounded his compound to protect him. Seven days later the Dalai Lama escaped into exile in India. As the crowds refused to leave the compound, the Chinese regime launched a military attack against Tibet, killing thousands of innocent civilians. Today, 50 years later descendants of persecuted victims and also sympathizers of Tibetans commemorated this day around the world, known as Tibetan Uprising Day.

[Gyaltsen Drolkar, Victim of Persecution]: I was arrested, as I took part in a peaceful demonstration in 1990. I just shouted some slogans. I shouted Free Tibet. I was detained in a detention center for four months, and during those four months, I was interrogated and tortured. I was subjected to all kinds of torture - mental torture, physical torture. I lost consciousness regularly from being electro-shocked. "They are brutally killing, they are destroying everything, but still we have a compassionate heart If you want to live in harmony with the world, we have to be compassionate in our hearts. Not like, you know, if I hate you, you hate me back - this is not an answer today in this generation. If we want to live in a peaceful way, we have to share something, sorrow and happiness - together. And its not just Tibetans who are marking this day. I believe, that the struggle for democracy is a universal one, and within China particularly the struggle for democracy of the Chinese people is also the struggle for democracy for Tibetan people.

Tibetans Mark 50 Years Since Uprising in New York
York, Tibetans gathered to call for freedom for Tibet marking the 50th anniversary of a failed Tibetan uprising against the Chinese regimes occupation. Lets have a look. Yesterday marked 50 years since the Tibetan Uprising, where more than 30,000 Tibetans protested the Chinese communist occupation in their country. As many as 86,000 Tibetans were killed in the violence. And in New York yesterday, protesters gathered to recall their personal stories of suffering and to call for freedom from communist rule. The protest ended at the Chinese Consulate in the late afternoon. According to the Tibetan community, the Chinese regime is responsible for the deaths of more than 1.2 million Tibetans, since 1949. They say that last year alone, more than 200 Tibetans were killed, while thousands were detained and tortured. This woman says she was arrested in Tibet earlier this month. She says the Chinese authorities planted a Tibetan flag in her bag to frame her. [Tesring Palden, Tibetan Youth Council]: On this day we want to remember those martyrs of Tibet who sacrificed their life for the sake of Tibetan freedom. [Tsewang Gonpo, Tibetan Regional Youth Congress]: Right now you know, undeclared martial law is imposed in Tibet. Tibetans are facing brutal suppression. Although China has barred media from Tibet, locals report frequent arrests, torture and even deaths at the hands of Chinese police and military personnel.

CCP Admits Increasing Troops in Tibet
(NTDTV) - yesterday Chinese Communist Party leader Hu Jintao said more troops have been sent to Tibet ahead of the 50 year anniversary of the Red Armys invasion there. Protests have already been underway in the region. In Guolou a police car and fire engine were blown up. Amnesty International says further troops increases will only lead to more unrest in the region.

Dalai Lama Demands Meaningful Autonomy
(NTDTV) - The Dalai Lama marked his 50 years in exile today by demanding "meaningful autonomy" for his Tibetan homeland. The Chinese regime has tightened security in Tibet to stifle protests against their rule. Speaking in Dharamsala before some 10,000 Tibetans from around the world, the 73-year old leader slammed the Communist Party for bringing "untold suffering and destruction" to Tibet and turning the region at times into "hell on earth."The Dalai Lama mourned what he called the suffering and destruction wrought by Chinese communist policies and campaigns. Yet while decrying China's crackdown on unrest 12 months ago and a lack of progress in talks between his envoys and Beijing, the Dalai Lama says the two sides must find a way forward together. The vice chairman of the Federation for a Democratic China says the current situation in Tibet should be blamed on the Chinese Communist Party. [Ching Jhin, Federation for a Democratic China]: "We are fully aware that the Chinese Communist Party and its rule are the roots of all problems across China, including Tibet. It is the misrule of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) that attributed to the loss of homes of Tibetans and their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama into exile for half a century."

Dalai Lama Says China Has Turned Tibet Into a 'Hell on Earth'
By Edward Wong, New York Times
The Dalai Lama delivered one of his harshest attacks on the Chinese government in recent times on Tuesday, saying that the Chinese Communist Party had transformed Tibet into a "hell on earth" and that the Chinese authorities regarded Tibetans as "criminals deserving to be put to death."

"Today, the religion, culture, language and identity, which successive generations of Tibetans have considered more precious than their lives, are nearing extinction," said the Dalai Lama, 73, the spiritual leader of Tibetans.

Chinese Regime Tightens Security on Tibet Anniversary
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama fleeing Tibet. An anniversary regarded as particularly sensitive by the Chinese Communist Party. Tibetans living in China have been placed under a massive security umbrella as Beijing moves to block any dissent. A year ago in March, monks led a protest against Chinese Communist Party rule in Tibet. But this year the CCP fears todays anniversary could bring fresh protests. Monks at Kumbum monastery in China's northwestern Qinghai Province are hoping there will be no trouble. "As Tibetan monks, we love our country and love our home. Our home is our country and we are just monks, you should understand that."

Hundreds of monks gathered at the monastery's prayer hall to do their morning rituals. "We are just praying. We light the candles and we pray. The objective of doing this is to better ourselves." But in the high plateau of Qinghai Province which borders Tibet, riot police are blocking roads leading to the monastery town of Tongren. Foreigners and reporters are being refused entry. Chinese Communist Leader Hu Jintao says his regime will not relax its control of the mountain region communist forces took control of in 1950.

China a world superpower? Not until it frees Tibet
(Times of London) - The Dalai Lama accused China yesterday of pushing Tibetan culture and identity to the brink of extinction in the 50 years since he was forced into exile in India.

In an unusually strongly worded speech at his headquarters in the north Indian town of Dharamsala, the Tibetan spiritual leader said his country had become a hell on Earth, with his people enduring "untold suffering and destruction" and being forced to live in fear. He said that Tibet had suffered a "brutal crackdown" since anti-China protests that began in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, a year ago yesterday and spread to other parts of Tibet. (more)

Chin Jin, Federation for A Democratic China (FDC)
10th March 1959 is an unforgettable day for Tibetans. 10 March 1959 was the day marked the beginning of the uprising in Lhasa and eventuated the flight of H.H. the Dalai Lama into exile and his 80000 followers. Today is the 50th anniversary of that tragic day and we, the Chinese democracy activists, are here to demonstrate our sympathy to our Tibetan brothers and sisters who have long lost their homes. Tibetan brothers and sisters, we are here to give you our full support to your movement of Free Tibet.

We have got to be fully aware that the Chinese Communist Party and its despotic rule are the roots of all problems across China including Tibet. It is the misrule of CCP that attributed to the loss of homes of Tibetans and their spiritual leader H.H. the Dalai Lama into exile for half century. It is also the counter historical trend of the CCP as a huge obstacle in the way of Chinese people for achieving their liberty, human rights and dignity. So we should say, the CCP and its misrule is the common fatal enemy of both the Free Tibet movement and Chinese democratic movement.
